The Missing Sense of Smell

Our smart devices today are becoming increasingly immersive. Sure we can see and hear things. Google Glass and the likes promise a new tech immersion, but what about smell? What if you could smell you friends, a new recipe, a game or a movie.

The ChatPerf from Scentee is a prototype add-on for iPhone aiming to allow friends to share smells. The device snaps onto the bottom of the phone and sprays out niffs on demand. The device uses cartridges which can be replaced once empty. The manufacturers plan on developing a version using the headphone jack for wider devices compatibility along with a developer SDK.

Attaching smells to a game could provide an interesting dimension however there are practical limitations. Previous attempts at this sort of experience have been unsuccessful. The smell of burning rubber, rotting Zombies or candy does sound a tempting feature addition to an increasingly feature competitive device market.
