Foc.us continues the recent trend of sticking electronics on your head along with Melon and Google Glass. The company recently announced they will be shipping their tDCS gaming headset towards the end of July 2013. You may have read reports in the media over the past few months of studies involving cognitive ability increase for math etc using transcrainial (your brain!) Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS). Foc.us are pushing the tech specifically at gamers strangely – perhaps a Demographic where permanent brain damage will be less noticeable. Seriously though, studies haven’t found any serious risks.
tDCS has been around over a hundred years and uses a small amount of direct current to stimulate areas of the brain. The Foc.us arrangement of electrodes stimulate the prefrontal cortex used for decision making. Foc.us specify the headset is not a toy and not recommended for under 18s, epilepsy suffers or people with implants. It should not be used in the treatment of any medical conditions.
Foc.us will be shipping with a companion iPhone app with and Android 4.3 version to follow. The app will connect with the headset over bluetooth 4.0 to control intensity and duration of the session safely. What remains to be seen if it offers any benefits over a strong cup of coffee.
You can pre-order Foc.us now.
I found some crazy DIY tDCS videos on YouTube, the best of which are from anthonynlee – scary viewing!
